OUR LIFE WHILE ON DUTY

ARMY LIFE

The LDF has military bases throughout the country where soldiers live and work. There are those who work in the army headquarters and hardly deployed in the forward bases, who lives with their families daily. Unless you're away on operations or training exercises you'll normally work 07.00 to 16.30hrs, Monday to Friday during summer while in winter is 08.00 to 16.30hrs Monday to Friday. During the weekends and holidays, you will attend roll-calls if your unit so requires. You'll also get 20 days leave a year which is more than most civilian jobs. We live normal life when home with our family members and this means you don't have to give up your old life. (an inspection of a formed up parade)

CAN I LEAVE THE ARMY BEFORE RETIREMENT AGE?

You join the army sometimes for various reasons, which may seem to make no difference with time and you cannot wait forever in a service you are no more comfortable with. On deciding to leave, you must follow the procedures that will protect your reputation while you were a serving member. Remember it is in the best interest of the LDF to manage and keep good working relationship with its former employees; be it the retirees or those who resigned. Once a soldier always a soldier. If you leave the army or are lawfully discharged there are certain services that you deserve including honouring your funeral with military parade.

MILITARY & TECHNICAL TRAINING

You'll start your career with Initial training (Phase 1), for nine months, where you'll learn to be a soldier. You'll be taught about what it means to be a soldier and how the Army works as well as learning survival and field craft skills, first aid, and how to use a rifle. Initial training teaches discipline, focus, and control. Service members are expected to be disciplined in their actions and words and to maintain control of their emotions and their physical selves at all times. Focus is one principle that is important in the army carrier. Lacking focus is like walking blind and not knowing where one is heading. After initial training you'll be deployed as an infantry soldier for three years unless you are a qualified professional whose services are required forthwith. After three years you may be transferred to other units through formal applications or as may be required for some reasons.

DAY TO DAY LIFE

You'll normally work normal hours depending on the season; 8.30hrs to 16.00hrs, winter, 0700hrs to 1630hrs in summer Monday to Friday, and you'll be free to do what you like in the evenings and weekends. But your time in public space ends at 2200hrs, when the military police or your unit can arrest as per the standing orders restricting movement beyond specified time. When you're on exercise or patrols, you'll be away from your routine life. Patrols can last up to three months, and you're usually given plenty of notice.

WHEN YOU'RE NOT WORKING

Being in the Army doesn't mean divorcing your family but it is a job that gives you an opportunity to develop your home too. On your arrival for the initial training, you are given a place to stay that you share with the course mates. After you finish training you either stay in the barracks with your unit members or you can decide to stay in the village if you are married. The organization have limited space within the barracks to accommodate all service members. This becomes a challenge and leads to people having to seek residents outside the barracks. You'll have plenty of free time but your whereabouts to be known by your unit commanders, especially for areas marked as out of bounds.

SPORTS

Sport is a big part of Army life. The army has various sporting codes that regularly improves not only your physical fitness, but also your team work. We regularly hold various sporting competitions at unit levels within the defence force, military bilateral games annually, security agencies and government departments. We are also the member of the CISM ESALO that is held regularly to bring world military countries together in sports.

ARMY ROLES

After joining the army you will join units with specific roles that one can work into throughout their carrier or can change for reasons. The unique culture in our army is that not everybody is sure to be deployed in a specific feild for the rest of their service. There are varying reason including a response, by the command, to misbehaviour by some professionals who are ignorant to their duty. It is worth noting therefore that every soldier or officer is subject to variety of trainings being in line with their profession or otherwise. You may be deployed in an infantry unit despite your nurse profession, for instance.equipment.

CAN ANYONE BECOME A SOLDIER?

Any recruit joining the army become amazed how loving and supporting the military organization is, in terms of creating a favorable living condition. The only difference for some is the manner in which the military shapes recruits to become an organized family. From the onset, recruits find themselves forming strong bonds that help them live and work together, in camps and on the battlefield. They are made to understand that the military is not a one man’s mission but that they should trust each other with their lives. Our way of life bring about strong bonds and make friends for life and anyone can live the military life span.

FAMILY & FRIENDS

We know that when you decide to join the Army, your friends and family will have loads of questions. Most importantly want to know that you'll be looked after. Your family has a say on how you behave and if feels your live has changed to the worst, they are free to meet the office from which their child is working. It is your responsibility and the right of the parents to know who you work with and the kind of life you’re living
